Operalia Winners Gala “Voces del Mundo para el Sur”

The bienal Galas of Operalia Winners is one of the most notable and appreciated activities that Fundación Sur Futuro celebrates as a fundraising activity for the execution of their environment, natural resources, health, education and infrastructure programs in the south region of the country.

Operalia is the world opera competition founded in 1993 by renowned tenor and orchestra conductor Plácido Domingo to discover and honour the best young opera singers of the world.

Two galas have been celebrated, one in the year 2003 and another in the year 2005, under the guidance of Maestro Domingo in the selection of the soloists as well as the program. The gala for the year 2007 had to be suspended due the passing of tropical storm Olga through our country.

Other outstanding events

Placido Domingo en Concierto and Plácido Domingo de mi alma latina

With the sponsorship of Banco Popular two gala concerts were celebrated with the participation of “King of Opera” charming and extraordinary tenor Plácido Domingo.

The first gala was in the Main Hall of National Theater Eduardo Brito “Plácido Domingo en Concierto” in the year 2002 and on that occasion the maestro was accompanied by Puerto Rican soprano Ana Maria Martinez, with an exciting program of opera arias, duets and zarzuela. The second gala “Plácido Domingo de mi alma Latina” was in Gran Teatro del Cibao in the year 2004 with Mexican singer Tania Libertad. On both occasions the National Symphony Orchestra was conducted by maestro Eugene Kohn.

Castilla y León Symphony Orchestra

In May 2006, we presented in the National Theater Eduardo Brito this young and dynamic orchestra, conducted by its Chief Conductor, Alejandro Posada Gomez. Santo Domingo was the closing of their American tour in commemoration of the Fifth Centenary of the death in Valladolid of Admiral Christopher Columbus. With a Spanish repertoire, the orchestra performed the New World Symphony of Antonin Dvorak as a homage to this tour. The tour was sponsored by the Junta de Castilla y León, the Spanish Embassy and Spanish Cultural Center in Dominican Republic, the State Ministry of Culture, National Theater Eduardo Brito and Dominican enterprises with Spanish roots such as: Ferreteria Americana, Ramos Group, Eurocreacion and Alvarez y Sanchez, Occidental Hotel El Embajador and Barcelo Lina Grand Hotel.

Orquesta Nacional de España

In September 2002 we presented the Orquesta Nacional de España for the first time in Santo Domingo. This presentation was a real musical event, not only because the orchestra is one of the most outstanding in the world, but because it was conducted by a living legend, Maestro Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, with a luminous and polychrome program, as the country it represents.

The splendid collaboration of the Spanish Ministry of Culture, of the National Institute of Scenic Arts and Music, of the Spanish Embassy in Santo Domingo, the State Ministry of Culture in our country and a group of distinguished and loyal sponsors made possible for Santo Domingo to be part of the tour of the orchestra in America.
