2003 Santo Domingo Music Festival
The fourth edition of the Santo Domingo Music Festival, dedicated to the ineffaceable memory of Don Pedro Rodríguez Villacañas, founder of Sinfonía, presented six concerts, from March 5 to 15 in the Main Hall of the National Theatre , four with Maestro Philippe Entremont conducting the Festival Orchestra and one with maestro Carlos Piantini conducting the National Symphony Orchestra.
During this Festival, the classical Russian film by Sergei Eisenstein "Battleship Potemkin", was presented, accompanied by the Festival Orchestra playing fragments of the symphonies by Dmitri Shostakovich. The first Academic Composition Competition for national composers was held. An honourable jury, which included maestros Frederic Kaufmann, Carlos Piantini, Santiago Falls and Alvaro Manzano, presided by Maestro Entremont, selected the composition Suite for Orchestra of the ballet “Insomnio” by Darwin Aquino as the wining piece. It was played on the fifth night of the festival conducted by maestro Álvaro Manzano.
